Chapter 9. BGP Routing Configuration

This chapter will discuss interdomain routing protocols and EGPs. Currently BGP4 is the de facto interdomain routing protocol. The primary concern of this chapter, therefore, is to prepare you to configure BGP on Juniper Networks routers. Though there are Juniper Networks “specific examples throughout this chapter, fundamentals and theoretical topics are also covered. This means that if you have experience with other router vendors , drawing the parallels between JUNOS and the others will be easy.

This chapter is not meant to be a complete reference on BGP. There are several other texts written on the subject that provide a more in-depth look into the protocol. The objective here is to provide a concise overview of the routing protocol, its major operational aspects, and JUNOS implementation and configuration. This will be accomplished by providing theoretical discussion supported by illustration and Chapter 10's case studies.

The chapter will begin by discussing the role of BGP and its relationship to the internetworking world. Then, it will examine the protocol's basic operational parameters and how they apply to routing. Next, it will examine the Juniper Networks implementation and how to configure the base protocol. Finally, it will cover scaling BGP.
