5.3 Chapter Summary

This chapter gives the reader an overview of the administrative responsibilities of a network engineer and how those responsibilities are carried out on a Juniper Networks router. We first looked at the methods with which we would make a physical connection to the router, including the console, auxiliary, and management Ethernet ports. We looked in detail at the structure of the commands needed to configure the management Ethernet connection. We then looked at methods of authenticating the identity and defining the permissions and restrictions of system users. We also discussed ways of configuring the router to rely on network authentication methods, including RADIUS and TACACS+. In Section 5.2.7 we learned how to enable FTP, Telnet, and SSH. We also learned some of the commands to use at the prompts encountered when using these services. We covered the steps that can be taken to recover a lost password. Finally, we looked at some of the other jobs that, although secondary, are still important to the configuration of the router. These included setting a host name, adjusting system time and date, configuring NTP, and specifying DNS servers for host- name resolution.
