4.14 Understanding the Configuration-Mode Banner

As discussed earlier, the CLI is an interface that you can use to monitor, troubleshoot, and configure your router. This section introduces you to navigation within the configuration mode, which is similar to the operational mode.

Configuration-mode navigation is a fairly simple task. The first thing to look at when using the configuration mode is the banner. Remember that the word edit is the first banner that you will see when entering the configuration mode. After that, as long as you stay in configuration mode, that banner will change to correspond to the level of the hierarchy that you are configuring.

The next example shows the output of a user who has just entered the configuration mode and is preparing to configure bgp . When the user types configure at the operational-mode prompt, the CLI displays Entering configuration mode , and the banner [edit] is added to the top of the prompt, indicating that the user is now in configuration mode. Just type the word edit with the appropriate completions to move to a specific level in the hierarchy. Notice that when the user types edit protocols bgp and presses the enter key, the banner changes to reflect the protocols bgp level of the hierarchy. This location is two levels down from the top of the hierarchy.
