3.8 Chapter Summary

This chapter covered information about the M-Series routers, their architecture, port density, and design, including the latest models introduced by Juniper Networks ”the M40e and the G10. By focusing on the structure, process flow, and components of each router model, the material has given you a solid basis by which to understand and apply the information that you will be given in the rest of this book.

After reading this chapter, you should have a good idea of how routing takes place through a Juniper Networks router, the function of the ASICs, and how fan trays and impellers keep the system components cool. You have also been familiarized with the router startup process and in what order the boot image locations are searched.

In addition to information on architecture and processes, you were also given information on upgrading the system software and some simple system administration. These topics will be covered in detail later in the book.
