15.8 Chapter Summary

This chapter covered material related to the simple and more advanced troubleshooting of Juniper Networks routers. Specifically, it introduced you to overall network troubleshooting and the Juniper Networks “prescribed model of troubleshooting, recommended for all of their customers.

You have learned how to gather information by visually inspecting the router and its components , such as the power supplies and control boards . You found that you can do this either locally or remotely through the CLI. In this way, you can tell how the router is functioning from a chassis and interface perspective. The system LEDs and craft interface give you much of the information you need to make a rapid assessment.

Besides the chassis information, you can use static monitoring for snapshots of a moment in the life of your Juniper Networks router. This information can provide important baseline information or clues to a problem that is developing.

Real-time information can be gleaned from traps sent to your NMS or from traceoptions commands. The traceoptions command set, as you have discovered , is a powerful debugging tool that, when used judiciously, can help you find the root of a complex problem. Enabling traceoptions from the [edit routing-options] hierarchy gives you a global perspective on the network. The chapter then showed you how to enable tracing flags to get more specific information per protocol.

By running traceoptions on different routing protocols, you can gain valuable insight into peering operations, exchange of periodic information, routing up dates, and so on. You will find this helpful in both preparing for the JNCIS exam and daily troubleshooting of simple and advanced network problems. Remember to use the JTAC when advanced problems frustrate normal troubleshooting, or refer to the Juniper Networks Web site or router technical manuals for further assistance.
