Items covered in this lesson include:
Setting up a data source through Windows
Configuring AutoCAD to access a database
The dbConnect Manager
Creating link templates
Creating links
Creating label templates
Creating labels
Creating queries
In your final lesson, I've tried to introduce you to some of the possibilities presented by interfacing (connecting) AutoCAD with a database. We've discovered quite a useful tool as AutoCAD has designed it. You can track materials throughout the design process using dbConnect, thus saving yourself (or your employer) time and money. You've made yourself a more valuable employee by increasing your abilities beyond simple draftsman or CAD operator.
But those of you who recognized the hidden value of the last two instructional sections (25.5 and 25.6) will become the industry leaders of the twenty-first century. I salute each of you. For those of you who don't quite understand, I'll offer a hint in the form of two words – programming languages.
With those words, I'll conclude instruction. The next phase of your education belongs in the three- dimensional world. I've given you a glimpse of the dragons to which that ancient map referred. Only the brave-hearted need continue. (Pick up a copy of 3D AutoCAD: One Step at a Time if you wish to go on.)
