in the beginning there was an image

A lot of people compare the human memory with that of a computer, but there are considerable differences. The computer memory is built up in a hierarchical model “ there is primary and secondary information on different levels “ as in computer software, where you go from one module to another, from one menu to another, finding your way to more specific details. The human memory is not a flowchart as in the computer. The way a computer works implies that it has to search through its whole memory in order to find what has been asked for, while the brain works in a completely different manner. Substantial parts of the brain s information handling instead imply images, feelings, smells, colours and associations of various kinds. Parts can make up wholes and the other way round. We normally don t remember in words, but in images, inner pictures which become words at later stages in the process. Memories could perhaps be split up and stored as parts of a complex situation, but when they are retrieved they form a whole again.
