Chapter 5. Understanding Application Classes and Variables

 < Day Day Up >

This chapter covers the following topics

  • Using application classes

  • Introducing variables

The Cisco Security Agent (CSA) is designed to be a highly effective endpoint security product. Besides being highly effective, CSA is also extremely tunable and efficient. Application classes and variables are two ways that you can streamline CSA configuration. By using these mechanisms, you can cut down on the number of specific rules you need to explicitly define. Using variables available within the CSA architecture enables you to group applications, networks, services, and other items discussed throughout this chapter into named sets that become reusable objects. You can reuse these objects throughout the various rules you create. In fact, these two mechanisms not only make your configuration more efficient, they also enable you to use globally defined parameters, which limits the possibility of making an error when defining rules.
