RADIUS is based on the client/server model and was originally developed by Livingston. The following RFCs define the RADIUS protocol: 2138, 2139, and 2865-2868. For more information, visit http://www.ietf.org/rfc.html. Features of RADIUSOne of the benefits of using RADIUS is that the protocol has strong accounting features. Also, RADIUS uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP) as its transport protocol and combines the services of authentication and authorization into one service. Further, RADIUS encrypts only the passwords in a packet when communicating between the RADIUS server and the router. RADIUS does not provide multiprotocol support and does not support AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA), NetWare Asynchronous Server Interface (NASI), NetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI), or X.25 packet assembler/disassembler (PAD).
