Supported Hardware and Software Easy VPN Devices

Just about any IOS router, PIX Firewall, or VPN client can function as an Easy VPN Remote device. Cisco classifies the devices to be used as an Easy VPN Remote according to device-processing power. The reason that we state this point is that an IOS router is an IOS router no matter where you place it.

However, the devices that Cisco lists as Easy VPN Remotes are the PIX 501 Firewall, 800 series routers, 900 series routers, and 1700 series routers. Of course, the VPN Software Client version 3.x and later and the VPN Hardware Client version 3.x or later are supported as Remote devices.

Cisco PIX 501 Firewall

The PIX 501 model firewall runs the same operating system as its larger cousins but is designed for a small office/home office (SOHO) environment. The 501 supports 3Mbps of encryption throughput when using 3DES and 10Mbps of cleartext throughput. The 501 also supports the Unity Client protocol.

Router Clients

IOS router Easy VPN Remote functionality was released in two separate IOS versions. Phase I was released in IOS version 12.2(4)YA, and Phase 2 was released in IOS version 12.2(8)YJ.

Cisco VPN Client Software Version 3.x or Higher

The VPN Client Software version 3.x and higher is often referred to by Cisco as the Unity Client . The Unity Client can create VPN tunnels to IOS routers, PIX Firewalls, and VPN concentrators . The Client is supported on the following operating systems:

  • Linux on Intel CPUs

  • Mac OS X 10.1

  • Microsoft Windows

  • Solaris on Sparc CPUs

Cisco VPN 3002 Hardware Client 3.x or Higher

The Hardware Client actually has the VPN Unity Client built into it. This client can be configured and managed by a command-line interface (CLI) or Web browser GUI. There are two models, both with console ports and public and private interfaces. The 3002-8E model supports seven additional 10/100 Ethernet interfaces.
