This chapter discussed all the key components of using a Windows Server 2003 DNS server in a Windows Server 2003 environment. It first covered the history and function of DNS, and then it discussed reverse lookups, in which an IP address can be resolved to a hostname, and the different types of records. It also looked at the naming conventions for both standard DNS and the DNS service included with Windows Server 2003. This chapter also discussed installing and configuring the Windows Server 2003 DNS server service, including all the major configuration activities from the initial installation to the manual creation of DNS records. This chapter also covered configuring a DNS client computer and configuring a zone for dynamic updates. Finally, the chapter concluded with a discussion of managing and monitoring the DNS service. |
