T

TCP port

A software address that lets the TCP/IPs deliver messages to the correct process on a computer. Each process running on a TCP/IP computer must be associated with a unique combination of an IP address and a port number. The combination of an IP address and a port number is called a socket.

TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)

The suite of communications protocols used to connect hosts on the Internet.

TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) filter

A filter that is used to prevent certain addresses or protocols from traversing a router.

TLD (top-level domain)

A domain that exists directly underneath the root domain.

token ring

A networking technology that is comparable to Ethernet, in which a token is used to determine who can send traffic onto the network. The data circulates through the ring until the system that it is intended for receives it and marks the token with an acknowledgment. The token then circles back to the sending system, which releases the token to the other stations on the ring.

tracert (trace route) utility

A command-line utility that traces the route that packets travel between the local host and the destination host and displays it to the screen.

Transport Mode

The use of IPSec not in a tunnel (with two configured endpoints). Commonly used on a private network between two hosts.

tree

A logical group of Windows Server 2003 domains that share a common DNS namespace.

triggered updates

Allows a router to announce changes in metric values almost immediately, rather than wait for the next periodic announcement. The trigger is a change to a metric in an entry in the routing table.

TSV (tab-separated values)

A file format that is used by text files that contain fields of data separated by tabs and carriage returns.

Tunnel Mode

The use of IPSec in a mode where two endpoints have been configured to create a tunnel, such as when a VPN tunnel is created.
