Installing Project Standard and Project Professional 2003

This section includes information and procedures for setting up Project Standard 2003 or Project Professional 2003 as a stand-alone desktop project management solution.

Project Standard and Project Professional System Requirements

Before you install Project Standard 2003 or Project Professional 2003, make sure that your system meets the minimum requirements. If you are planning on working on large projects with hundreds of tasks , summary assignments, and resource pools, it is recommended that you have up to an additional 128MB of RAM available. The system requirements for a computer running Project Standard or Project Professional include:

  • Intel Pentium 233MHz (minimum) or higher processor. Intel Pentium III class processor (or better) is recommended.

  • 128MB of additional RAM beyond the requirements of your operating system (minimum) is recommended.

  • 130MB of available hard disk space (hard disk usage will vary depending on configuration; custom installation choices may require more or less hard disk space).

  • Super VGA (800x600) or higher resolution monitor.

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 with Service Pack3or later, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack2or later, or Microsoft Internet Explorer with Service Pack1or later. For the best experience, use Internet Explorer 6.0.

  • Project Server 2003 and Project Professional 2003 required for enterprise project and resource management capabilities. Project Server 2003 has a separate set of system requirements.

  • To use Microsoft Office Project Web Access 2003 with Project Professional 2003, you need 5MB additional hard disk space, plus Microsoft Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002, or Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 if you plan on importing project tasks to an Outlook calendar.

    Note

If you want to use non-enterprise (workgroup style collaboration) or enterprise project and resource management, you will also need to connect Project Professional to Project Server.

Installation Options
start example

You have five ways to install Project: Upgrade Now, Typical Install, Complete Install, Minimal Install, and Custom Install. Any custom component can be added or removed later by placing your Project CD-ROM into your CD drive and running setup.exe. The five installation options do the following:

  • Upgrade is available if you have a previous version of Project installed on your computer. Previous versions of Project will be removed unless you select the Complete Install, Minimal Install, Typical Install, or Custom Install option when upgrading to Project 2003.

  • Typical Install installs Microsoft Office Project 2003 with the most commonly used components. You can install additional features on first use or add them later using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

  • Complete Install installs all files available to be installed, including components that are not normally used during the day-to-day use of Project by the majority of users.

  • Minimal Install installs Project 2003 with just the minimum number of files required to run Project.

  • Custom Install enables you to install components of Project that are not normally installed by selecting from the following options: Run From My Computer, Run All From My Computer, Installed On First Use, and Not Available.

Upgrading from a Previous Version of Project

How is upgrading from a previous version of Project different from a clean installation? If you choose to replace your old version of Project when upgrading to Project Standard 2003 or Project Professional 2003, you may not be able to open project files created in versions of Project earlier than Microsoft Project 2000 because the data structure in Project 2003 has been enhanced and expanded with new fields, details, and capabilities. This means that older versions of Project cannot read a file created in Project Standard 2003 or Project Professional 2003. Files created in Microsoft Project 2000 and Microsoft Project 2002 can be opened in Microsoft Project 2003 because the databases are compatible; files created in versions of Project earlier than Microsoft Project 2000 must be saved in an MPD file format before you can open them in Project Standard 2003 or Project Professional 2003.

Cross-References

For more information about saving a project file as an MPD file format, see "Saving and Opening with Different File Formats".

If you have a previous version of Project installed on your computer when you run Project Standard 2003 or Project Professional 2003 Setup, you have some choices that are different than the steps described in "Setting Up Project 2003 for the First Time."

To upgrade an older version of Microsoft Project to Project 2003, run Microsoft Office Project 2003 Setup. Be sure to close down any other applications that you might have running. Place the Microsoft Office Project 2003 CD in your computer's CD-ROM drive. If Microsoft Office Project 2003 Setup doesn't start automatically, open the contents of the CD-ROM and double-click setup.exe. After Microsoft Office Project 2003 Setup is running, continue through the following steps to complete installation.

The process is basically the same as installing a new copy of Project, except that you will be given two options during the setup process:

  • Upgrade to Project 2003. Select Upgrade to upgrade to Project 2003 and remove all previous versions of Project.

  • Keep or remove previous versions of Project. If you want to keep previous versions of Project on your computer, you must select Custom Install, Typical Install, Minimal Install, or Complete Install instead of Upgrade.

Activating Project 2003

Project 2003 runs with full product features 50 times before it requires activation. The Microsoft Office Project 2003 Activation Wizard runs the first time you run Microsoft Project, and it will guide you through the activation process.

You can activate Project over the Internet or by phone. If you choose to activate by phone, the activation process could take longer.

To activate Project, do the following:

  1. Start Microsoft Office Project 2003. The Microsoft Office Project 2003 Activation Wizard appears if you have not yet activated Project.

  2. On the Activation Wizard page of the Microsoft Office Project 2003 Activation Wizard, select either I Want To Activate The Software Over The Internet or I Want To Activate The Software By Telephone. Click the Next button.

  3. On the next page, click Register Now to register your copy of Project 2003 (optional). Click Close to finish activating Project 2003.

Running Maintenance Mode

After Project has been installed successfully, you can add or remove optional features, perform repairs , or uninstall the entire application using Maintenance Mode. To use Maintenance Mode, place your Project CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive to run Project Setup. The Maintenance Mode Options window appears.

You can now add or remove features, make repairs, or uninstall Project by selecting one of the following options:

  • Add Or Remove Features

  • Reinstall or Repair

  • Uninstall

The following sections detail each of these options.

Adding or Removing Features

To add or remove features of Project, do the following:

  1. Place your Project CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM drive. The Maintenance Mode Options window appears. If this window does not automatically appear, browse to your Project CD-ROM and run setup.exe.

  2. Select Add Or Remove Features.

  3. Click the Next button.

    The Advanced Customization window appears.

  4. To add a feature, click the arrow next to the feature you want to add, and change Not Available to either Run From My Computer or Installed On First Use.

Installed On First Use makes the feature available, and you can run this feature from Project at a later date. You might be required to insert the Project CD-ROM or access the network drive from which you originally installed Project to use the added feature. Because of this, you should select the Installed On First Use option only if you will have access to the Project CD-ROM or network location at the time you run this feature.

Run From My Computer installs the feature on your computer's hard disk. You will not be asked to provide the Project CD-ROM when you first run this feature.

  5. To remove a feature, click the arrow next to the feature you want to remove and change the Run From My Computer or Installed On First Use setting to Not Available. Click the features you want to add or remove and click the Update button.

Project Setup will perform the actions you indicated. Setting a feature to Not Available will remove the feature entirely. You cannot use this feature until you add it using the steps described earlier.

  6. When finished adding or removing features, click the Update button.

Repairing Microsoft Project

Occasionally, you might notice that Microsoft Project isn't running as well as it should. This problem can be caused by many factors, including frequently installing or uninstalling software or continuously using an application.

You can repair your Microsoft Project installation by running Maintenance Mode Options and selecting the Reinstall or Repair option. To repair your copy of Microsoft Project, do the following:

  1. Place your Microsoft Project CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM drive.

The Maintenance Mode Options window appears. If this window does not automatically appear, browse to your Project CD-ROM and run setup.exe.

  2. Select Reinstall or Repair.

  3. Click Next.

The Reinstall Or Repair Project window appears.

  4. Select Reinstall Project to restore your copy of Project to its original settings.

  5. Select Detect And Repair Errors In My Project Installation to search for the source of the problems you might be experiencing with your current installation of Microsoft Project.

  6. Click the Install button to restore your copy of Microsoft Project to its original settings or to detect and repair errors.

Uninstalling Microsoft Project

You can use Maintenance Mode to uninstall Microsoft Project from your computer. To uninstall Microsoft Project, do the following:

  1. Place your Microsoft Project CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM drive.

The Maintenance Mode Options window appears. If this window does not automatically appear, browse to your Microsoft Project CD-ROM and run setup.exe.

  2. Select Uninstall Microsoft Project.

  3. Click the Next button.

  4. Click Yes to uninstall Microsoft Project or click No to cancel.

Working with an Administrative Installation Point

If you need to make Project available for installation by multiple users on a network, consider creating an administrative installation point. This installation point provides any user who needs to install a copy of Project with a way to install it by finding the location on the network and running setup.exe.

Creating an Administrative Installation Point

To create an administrative installation point, do the following:

  1. Click Start, Run.

  2. Enter your CD-ROM drive letter.

  3. Type setup.exe.

  4. Enter /a.

For example, if your CD-ROM drive letter is D, the line you enter to create an administrative installation point is d:\setup.exe /a. You then specify the location to use as an administrative installation point. Anyone who runs setup.exe from the administrative installation point can install Microsoft Project.

This feature is available only for versions of Microsoft Project that have one of the following MSI files in the root directory of the CD-ROM:

  • prjstde

  • prjproe

Adding Your Company Name to the Default Installation

You can add your company's name to the Project Setup program in an administrative installation point by adding COMPANYNAME="xx" (where "xx" is your company's name, including the quotation marks) to the command line when creating an administrative installation point. For example:

 D:\Setup.exe /a COMPANYNAME="Microsoft"
