Identifying Events

I l @ ve RuBoard

If you have configured your enterprise so that all of the events are sent to a centralized event browser, you may need a way to distinguish events from each other. Event browsers typically include the event source in the message of an event. Many enterprise management frameworks provide some kind of grouping mechanism to group events together.

In IT/O, for example, has message groups. When events are received into IT/O by an agent or at a management station, message groups are assigned based on matching conditions defined in the templates. Message group names are shown along with the event in the Message Browser. Additionally, you can view the Message Group window, which shows the status of each message group. The color of the message group icon represents the status of the worst severity event in that category.

IT/O uses five different colors to represent event severity. Here is a list of the colors and their meaning.

  • Green: Normal/Up

  • Cyan (Light Blue): Warning/Marginal

  • Yellow: Minor warning

  • Orange: Major warning

  • Red: Critical/Down

Figure 9-1 shows message groups configured into IT/O. In this example, OpenView SMART Plug-Ins have added a whole set of database message groups, including groups for configuration events, faults, and performance.
