Chapter 8. Monitoring the Database

I l @ ve RuBoard

Databases are often key applications in a company's environment. Companies are more stringent in their demands on databases, requiring high availability Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and quick response to decision support queries. Databases and database servers are built on sophisticated architectures with an array of configuration options, making them a tough management challenge.

Tools are needed to reduce the time spent detecting and isolating database problems. A database is dependent on the underlying system, disks, and networks. Each of these components is discussed in other chapters of this book. This chapter provides information on monitoring tools that are specific to databases.
