We would like to acknowledge a number of people who contributed to this book.

This book covers a variety of topics, and we borrowed time from a number of experts in various areas. Peter Weygant provided some guidance as to the overall structure of the book. Barb Craig, Scott Rhine, David Miller, John Payne, and Maria Fisk were helpful with their reviews of material on disk management and hardware monitoring. Mike Traynor, Pat Mahoney, and Winson Lau assisted with the chapter on network monitoring. Bob Sauers provided some performance information, and Tom Murray provided some tools that made the MIB data presentable to the reader.

Srilakshmi Sitaraman, Mike Grote, and Ninga Singireddy from Sun Microsystems gave a lot of their time and assistance in gathering information on the SyMON product.

We would like to thank Stephen Campbell at Hewlett-Packard for his descriptions of the SMART Plug-Ins products and his help in rewriting the database chapter to address many inaccuracies.

We would also like to thank Sara Robinson at BMC Software for supplying a demo copy of the BMC PATROL applications. Judy Posey at IT Masters was also very helpful in providing information and screen shots for MasterCell.

Pam Saverthal and Birgitte Ishak were also extremely helpful in processing our last-minute mailings to the publisher.

Lillian Lim from Informatica Corporation was one of the few people who was able to review many of the chapters. She also prodded us to take the book to completion.

We would like to thank Mark Orvek and the rest of Julie's project team for their patience and support.

Lastly we would like to express our gratitude to Pam Mujica and Joe Green. Without their executive sponsorship at Hewlett-Packard, this book would not have been possible.
