Summary

Many tools are included with Exchange Server to help manage an Exchange organization. An Exchange administrator can use various Windows Server 2003 tools, such as Event Viewer. The main tool in an administrator ‚ s arsenal is the System Manager snap-in, which manages objects throughout the Exchange hierarchy.

System Manager is actually a saved console file that connects to a Windows domain controller in order to get configuration information regarding your Exchange organization. You can customize the console to your use or create custom consoles for other administrators.

Administrative access to Exchange objects can be configured. An administrator can assign permissions to specific users or groups at different levels of the Exchange hierarchy in order to determine who has what type of access to what information. The Exchange Administration Delegation Wizard lets you select a user or group and assign them a specific administrative role. Roles include the Exchange Full Administrator, Exchange Administrator, and Exchange View Only Administrator.

Many Windows tools are useful in monitoring an Exchange server. These include:

  • Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

  • Event Viewer

  • System Monitor

  • Registry Editor

  • Computer Management

  • Task Manager

In addition, Exchange provides a number of tools useful for monitoring system performance and troubleshooting. These include the Monitoring and Status utility, the Queue Viewer, and the Message Tracking Center.

System and recipient policies allow an administrator to create collections of configuration settings that can be easily applied to large numbers of objects at once. For example, you might create a policy that configures storage limits and deletion times for mailbox stores. You could then apply those settings across a group of stores without having to manually configure each store.
