Exam Essentials

Understand the pros and cons of the various connectors. It is important to understand what is good and bad about each of the three types of connectors available in Exchange Server 2003. The Routing Group Connector (RGC) is the simplest to configure and manage and offers the ability to have Exchange create the other end of the connection automatically. RGCs work with both Exchange Server 2003 routing groups and Exchange Server 5.5 sites, using SMTP for the former and RPC for the latter ‚ regardless of whether or not the Exchange Server 5.5 computers have SMTP installed. SMTP Connectors can be used to force an SMTP connection between routing groups and Exchange Server 5.5 sites and are also useful for establishing connectivity with foreign and Internet-based mail systems. SMTP Connectors also offer a wide array of configuration and security options that are not present in RGCs; this comes at the cost of more advanced skills required to configure and manage them as well as the fact the SMTP Connectors must be manually created for both ends of the connection. X.400 Connectors are useful in low-bandwidth situations, but like SMTP Connectors, they must be manually configured and managed on both ends of the connection. As well, X.400 Connectors require the presence of the X.400 stack before they can be created.

Know how operating in native mode changes the Exchange organization. At the cost of not allowing the coexistence with Exchange Server 5.5 computers, operating your Exchange Server 2003 organization in native mode is the best course of action. You gain the following capabilities when operating in native mode:

  • A server can belong to an administrative group, but it does not have to belong to one of the routing groups within that administrative group.

  • Administrative groups do not have to contain any routing groups.

  • A single administrative group can contain all routing groups within the organization.

  • You can move mailboxes between any servers in the organization.
