Exam Essentials

Understand group types and scopes. It is important that you understand fully the different group types and group scopes that can exist within Active Directory. As well, you should understand how the use of a particular group scope can impact your Exchange organization by limiting who can determine group membership.

Understand the background of query-based distribution groups. Query-based distribution groups are a great new feature in Exchange Server 2003. Therefore, you should expect to be tested on what they are, what they do, and how they work. You must understand the processes involved in creating one and in sending an e-mail to one. Also, you should understand the drawbacks associated with using query-based distribution groups.

Know the difference between mail-enabled and mailbox-enabled. Although it is very simple in nature, many people get confused when it comes to remembering the difference between a mailbox-enabled object and a mail-enabled object. Mailbox-enabled objects can send and received e-mail messages using the Exchange organization and store their messages in an Exchange mailbox. Mail-enabled objects can send and receive e-mail messages but do not have an associated Exchange mailbox. Some mail-enabled objects, such as contacts, send and receive e-mail using an external ISP account. Other mail-enabled objects, such as distribution groups, use the Exchange organization to receive mail but have no mailbox themselves .

Understand the Recipient Update Service. Although we only briefly examined the Recipient Update Service (RUS) here, you should understand its basic purposes as well as how and when it might be used manually in your Exchange organization. Recall that only one instance of the Recipient Update Service (Enterprise Configuration) object exists for the entire Exchange organization, but that there will be one Recipient Update Service (installation Active Directory domain) object per domain that contains one or more Exchange servers. You will see more of the RUS in Chapter 10 when we discuss recipient policies.
