Summary

Three aspects of security were covered in this chapter. The first aspect is Exchange Server ‚ s basic reliance on Windows Server 2003 ‚ s security services. These include user accounts and authentication, Exchange administrative groups, system and recipient policies, and auditing.

The second aspect concerns networking security. This includes the protection of virtual servers through authentication, as well as the use of firewalls to protect private network resources from unauthorized access. Firewalls provide protection by closing access to port numbers , except for those applications that are permitted to pass data through the firewall.

Exchange Server 2003 extends the use of firewalls with application of front-end and back-end servers.

The final aspect is messaging security. Advanced security facilitates the authentication of a message sender ‚ s identity and the privacy of message data. Authentication is accomplished using digital signatures, and message privacy is maintained using encryption. In Exchange terminology, signing refers to authentication, and sealing refers to encryption.

Using the native PKI available in Exchange Server 2003, you need only install and configure one or more Certificate Authorities, make some minor configurations to the Exchange organization, and issue your users digital certificates to allow them to digitally sign and encrypt e-mail messages. The complicated and difficult to work with KMS has gone the way of the dinosaur in Exchange Server 2003.

Problems with your Exchange organization are something that you never want to have to deal with. However, understanding some of the more common issues that you may face will give you a leg up when things are bad. Common issues with Exchange Server 2003 include name resolution ‚ based problems, Active Directory problems, and network connectivity issues. Being able to recognize the signs of trouble and react correctly to the situation at hand will be instrumental in keeping your Exchange organization operating smoothly.
