Chapter 15: Securing and Troubleshooting Exchange Server 2003

Overview

As computer networking has become more pervasive, the information transported over networks has become more valuable . As a result, some unscrupulous people try to steal information and disrupt business affairs. E-mail messages are susceptible to eavesdropping, tampering, and forgery. Implementing the proper security measures can prevent these and other security threats.

This chapter covers three aspects of security that you must concern yourself with as an Exchange administrator. The first feature is the collection of basic security services built into Windows Server 2003, including permissions, policies, and auditing. The second is network security, which includes authentication, the configuration of firewalls and proxy servers, and the prevention of virus attacks. The final aspect (and the primary focus of the chapter) is messaging security, which includes the digital signature and encryption of messages using the Windows Server 2003 Certificate Services.

Of course, nothing ever works perfectly forever, Exchange Server 2003 included. Your ability to troubleshoot and quickly resolve problems affecting your Exchange organization will be critical to keeping your Exchange organization running smoothly and your users happy. To that end, we will briefly examine some common issues related to name resolution, network connectivity, and Active Directory that you may encounter.
