Coexistence with Exchange 2000 Server

In a most situations where Exchange 2000 Server is already in place in an organization, you will be coexisting with it for at least a short period of time ‚ perhaps indefinitely if no upgrade plans currently exist. Coexisting with Exchange 2000 Server is very easy as compared to coexisting with Exchange Server 5.5. You ‚ ll really need only to run ForestPrep and DomainPrep to prepare Active Directory for the new Exchange Server 2003 installations. Note that Exchange Server 2003 does not support several components , and thus you will need to keep them running on your Exchange 2000 Servers until they are no longer needed:

  • Microsoft Mobile Information Server ‚ Not needed in Exchange Server 2003 because this functionality has been built in.

  • Instant Messaging ‚ Replaced by the Live Communications Server , a separate add-on product for your network.

  • Exchange Chat ‚ Not supported.

  • Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server ‚ Not supported.

  • Key Management Service (KMS) ‚ Not needed in Exchange Server 2003 because the Windows Server 2003 PKI handles this responsibility.

  • The cc:Mail connector ‚ Not supported.

  • The MS Mail connector ‚ Not supported.

    Note ‚

As you ‚ ll see later in this chapter, you will need to remove these components before attempting to upgrade an Exchange 2000 Server to Exchange Server 2003.

Before you attempt to install the first Exchange Server 2003 into your Exchange 2000 Server organization, you should first ensure that all your servers are at Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or later and Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 or later. Being at these SP levels will ensure that your organization is best prepared for both the coexistence and the eventual upgrade/migration to follow.

The high-level process to install the first Exchange Server 2003 server into an existing Exchange 2000 Server organization is composed of the following steps:

  1. Install Windows Server 2003 on the server and join it to the domain in which the Exchange 2000 Server is located.

  2. Ensure that .NET Framework, ASP.NET, the World Wide Web Publishing Service, the Simple Mail Transfer (SMTP) service, and the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service are installed and running on the server. Exercise 3.1 previously discussed installing these services.

  3. Install the Windows Server 2003 Support Tools on the server.

  4. Run the DCDiag utility.

  5. Run the NetDiag utility.

  6. Run Exchange Server 2003 setup /forestprep as discussed in Exercise 3.2.

  7. Run Exchange Server 2003 setup /domainprep as discussed in Exercise 3.3.

  8. Install Exchange Server 2003 as outlined below in Exercise 12.1.

    Note ‚

If your plans call for an upgrade to Windows Server 2003, you will want to give some serious consideration to installing at least one Windows Server 2003 domain controller and configuring it as a global catalog server at this time. Doing so can prevent some problems that might occur during upgrades to Exchange Server 2003.

    Note ‚

If you get an error telling you that the schema master could not be contacted when you attempt to run ForestPrep, ensure that the server is joined to the Active Directory domain and has the correct TCP/IP settings applied. Over 95 percent of these errors can be eliminated by checking and correcting these commonly overlooked issues.

EXERCISE 12.1: Installing the First Exchange Server into the Exchange 2000 Server Organization
  1. Insert the Microsoft Exchange Server CD into the server ‚ s CD-ROM drive. If your CD-ROM drive is set to automatically run CDs, this will automatically open the Welcome to Exchange Server 2003 Setup page. If not, browse to the location of your CD-ROM and double-click the

     setup.exe file.
  2. Click the Exchange Deployment Tools link.

  3. On the Welcome to the Exchange Server Deployment Tools page, click the Deploy The First Exchange 2003 Server link.

  4. On the Deploy the First Exchange Server 2003 page, click the Upgrade From Exchange 2000 Server Native Mode link.

  5. Ensure that you ‚ ve completed all of the preliminary actions in Steps 1 through 7 discussed previously.

  6. Scroll down the Exchange Server Deployment Tools page until you locate Item 8, Install Exchange Server 2003. Click the Run Setup Now link.

  7. When prompted, agree to the EULA, and click Next to continue.

  8. Enter your 25-digit CD-key, and click Next to continue.

  9. The Component Selection page lists the installation options, as well as the option to choose the directory into which Exchange Server will be installed. This latter option is accessed through the Change Path button. For this exercise, we will assume that the installation directory is the default, C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr . The installation option we will use for this exercise is Typical, which includes the messaging components and management tools. If you would like to see the individual components that can be selected, choose the Custom option from the drop-down menu to the left of the first item in the list, Microsoft Exchange. You can then choose whether to install each individual option using that option ‚ s drop-down menu. Once you ‚ ve made all of your decisions, click Next to go on.

  10. A Licensing screen appears, explaining the need for you to purchase Client Access Licenses before clients can access this Exchange server. Exchange Server 2003 supports only the per-seat licensing mode. Once you have read and agreed to this licensing, click the I Agree That I Have Read And Will Be Bound By The License Agreements For This Product option, and then click Next.

After the installation is complete, you might want to explore the Exchange System Manager (ESM) on both the Exchange 2000 Server and the newly installed Exchange Server 2003 server to see the small differences. Figure 12.1 shows the Exchange 2000 Server version, while Figure 12.2 shows the Exchange Server 2003 version.

Figure 12.2: The Exchange organization via the Exchange Server 2003 ESM

While you will be able to perform common management tasks using the Exchange Server 2003 ESM, should you need to configure Exchange 2000 Server ‚ specific items, such as the Key Management Service, Instant Messaging, IRC, or Chat, you will need to use the Exchange 2000 Server ESM. Likewise, if you need to work with Recovery Storage Groups or the Mailbox Recovery Center, you ‚ ll need to work with the Exchange Server 2003 ESM.

  1. The Installation Summary dialog box appears, asking you to confirm your installation choices. You can use the Back button to change any settings you have made. When you are satisfied with your choices, click Next to install Exchange Server 2003.

  2. The installation process can take some time. When it is done, a Congratulations screen appears, informing you that the installation is complete. Click the Finish button.
