Troubleshooting

Because you are relying on the Exchange 5. x Directory Service, the Active Directory, and the components that tie the two together, ADC and SRS, troubleshooting coexistence problems can be tricky. This section provides some troubleshooting tips and places to start looking when things go wrong.

The first action to take when troubleshooting is to check the more obvious sources of potential error. These include the following:

  • Are all your servers running?

  • Are the ADC and SRS services actually running on the Exchange Server 2003 server? Is the Directory Service running on any Exchange 5. x servers? Use the Services tool or Task Manager to make sure.

  • Is a connection agreement configured between the Active Directory and the appropriate Exchange 5. x server? If so, is it properly configured?

  • Is the container to which you want an entry replicated displayed in the Export Containers list? If not, you ‚ ll need to add it.

  • Do you have sufficient permissions on the target directory to which you are trying to replicate?

  • Have you checked the Windows Application Log for any error messages?

  • Can you connect to the SRS port (379 by default) on the Exchange Server 2003 server?

  • Is the correct port being specified for the Active Directory Connector ‚ s LDAP communications? Recall that Active Directory locks the default LDAP port 389 for its own usage.

Once you have exhausted these possibilities, there are a few situations you should be aware of in which an object would not replicate between an Exchange 5. x Directory and Active Directory. These are outlined in Table 11.1.
