Viewing and Printing Font Samples

[Previous] [Next]

To see samples of the fonts installed on your system, open the Start menu and choose Settings, Control Panel, Fonts. (If you've set up your Start menu to include an expandable Control Panel, right-click Fonts. From the shortcut menu, choose either Open or Explore.)

Figure 13-1 shows an example of a Fonts folder.

The icons with an O represent OpenType fonts, those with two Ts represent TrueType fonts, those with a lowercase a represent Type 1 fonts, and those with a capital A denote raster and vector fonts. The point sizes for which the nonscalable fonts were designed are usually included with the font name.

To see a sample of any font, simply launch its icon—or right-click the icon and choose Open from the shortcut menu. As Figure 13-2 on the next page shows, the ensuing window displays the font at sample point sizes.

To print the font sample, click the Print button.

Viewing Options in the Fonts Folder

Like any other Windows Explorer window, the Fonts folder offers a Large Icons view, a List view, and a Details view of your font library. You can choose these options from the Standard Buttons toolbar or the View menu. In addition, the View menu of the Fonts folder offers these additional viewing options:

  • List Fonts By Similarity. Lets you find all the fonts in your library that are similar to some other font. As Figure 13-3 shows, when you choose this option, a box containing a list of your fonts appears below the toolbar. Your font library appears in the window below the box in order of decreasing similarity to the font you select in the list, although you can click a column head to change the sort order if you want.
  • click to view at full size.

Figure 13-3. In this "similarity" view, fonts are listed in order of decreasing similarity to Arial.

  • Hide Variations. Displays only one font from each font family. For example, suppose your Fonts folder includes Arial, Arial Bold, Arial Italic, and Arial Bold Italic. If you choose Hide Variations, the list shows only Arial. This option, which you can use in any viewing mode, is particularly handy when you have a large font library.
  • Preview. Sets the ScreenTip that appears when you hover over each font name or icon to display a brief phrase in the font itself. This gives you a quick way to see the style of the typeface without opening the sample window. (Preview is available only if you have set up Windows Explorer so that you open items with a single click.)
