Chapter 35

Among its accessories, Microsoft Windows 2000 includes Calculator. This oft-overlooked tool won't replace your favorite spreadsheet program. But Calculator can replace the four-function handheld calculator that too frequently gets lost amidst the shuffle of papers on your desk—and then some. In addition to its convenience, Calculator offers other advantages over an inexpensive handheld calculator:

  • Calculator offers 32-digit precision, which allows you to work with extremely large and extremely small numbers. Most inexpensive calculators can handle only 8 digits.
  • Calculator can perform many scientific and statistical functions, which are usually available only in specialized handheld calculators.
  • Calculator can work in binary, octal, and hexadecimal in addition to decimal, a feature that's usually available only in specialized calculators for programmers.
  • You can copy results from Calculator to the Clipboard and then paste them in another application, saving time and reducing the likelihood of errors.

We don't mean to suggest that Calculator will be your most-used program, but if you haven't used it in awhile, it deserves another look.
