Creating a Transcript of Your Communications Session

[Previous] [Next]

You can create a transcript of any communications session in either of two ways. You can capture (save) the session information to a text file on disk, or you can send it directly to the printer. With either method you can stop and restart the process to capture only the portion of the communications session you want.

To record your session in a text file, open the Transfer menu and choose Capture Text. Enter a name for your file into the File text box of the Capture Text dialog box, and then click the Start button. Notice that the word Capture in the status bar is now black, indicating that capture mode is on.

You can temporarily pause capturing by choosing Pause from the Capture Text submenu. To resume capturing text, choose Resume from the Capture Text submenu. When you're finished capturing, choose Stop from the Capture Text submenu.

To create a printed transcript, choose Capture To Printer from the Transfer menu. A check mark will appear in front of the Capture To Printer command and all the session information you send or receive will be spooled to a print file in preparation for printing.

You can stop capturing to the printer—or start again—by choosing the Capture To Printer command again to toggle the check mark off and on. When you stop capturing, HyperTerminal prints the information.

As an alternative to capturing to the printer, you can print the contents of the backscroll buffer by choosing Print from the File menu. You can also print a selection of information from your online session by following this procedure:

  1. In the HyperTerminal window, scroll to the information you want to print.
  2. Select the information, using the standard Windows text-selection methods.
  3. Choose Print from the File menu.
  4. Click the Selection button and click OK.
