Marking Up Documents with Handwritten Ink Comments

Marking Up Documents with Handwritten Ink Comments

Another area where handwriting might soften the blow is when you add comments to a document. How much more personal is it to say, “Rewrite this entire paragraph — it stinks,” in handwriting rather than in cold, hard text, right?

Comments are a feature of Word that inserts a little cartoonlike balloon with a line pointing to a spot in your document. You can enter a comment in that balloon.

This feature is great to use for lengthy, complex documents, such as project reports or books, where several writers and/or editors might be involved in reviewing drafts.

Ink Comments are just like comments you insert in a Word document, except that the little balloon where you usually type text is actually an Ink Drawing and Writing object.

You can write words or scribble drawings in it. Ink Comments appear alongside non-ink Comments, and you can view them in the Reviewing Pane when you use the Reviewing feature of Word.

Remember  To display the Reviewing toolbar in Word, choose ViewðToolbarsðReviewing. Tap the Reviewing Pane button (the button on the far right of the Reviewing toolbar that looks like a little note with a bold blue arrow on the top) to display all comments at the bottom of the screen.

Here’s how you insert an Ink Comment into a document:

  1. Place your cursor in the document where you want to insert the comment.

  2. Choose InsertðInk Comment.

A blank comment appears, as shown in Figure 10-8.

Figure 10-8: A comment adds a line to show where your insertion point was when you inserted the comment, drawing the reader’s attention to that place right away.

  3. Write your comment in the balloon that appears on-screen.

Comments are saved when you save the document; no need to save or send them separately.

The Ink toolbar is available while editing comments if you want to use a different ink thickness or color.

Tip  You can delete any comment by tapping it and selecting Delete Comment from the shortcut menu that appears.
