Hour 5. Creating Documents from Existing Documents, Templates, and Wizards

Hour 5. Creating Documents from Existing Documents, Templates, and Wizards

You can type and format all of your documents from scratch, but you don't have to. If you have an existing document that resembles the document you want to create, you can simply base your new document on the existing one and then revise the new document as needed. If you don't have an appropriate document on hand, Word's templates can help you out. A template is a rough blueprint for a document that includes some combination of text and formatting. The default template, Normal, produces a blank document with "plain- vanilla " formatting. But Microsoft provides literally hundreds of other templates, for creating everything from memos, letters , and fax cover sheets to r sum s, reports , and more. In this hour, you learn to use two of these other templates, and you also try out a couple of wizards. A wizard is a special kind of template that asks you a series of questions, and then creates a "made-to-order" document based on your answers.

The highlights of this hour include

  • Creating a new document based on an existing document

  • Finding out how templates and wizards can help you

  • Selecting a template or wizard for a new document

  • Creating a document with a template

  • Creating a document with a wizard
