If Word asks whether to save changes to a document, click Yes or No depending on what you would like to do. (See "Saving a Document" in Part 4.)
All open Word windows close, and no Word buttons remain on the taskbar.
INTRODUCTION
When you are finished working with Word, you need to exit the program. When you issue the command to exit, Word checks to see if you are working on a document that has unsaved changes. If you are, it gives you a chance to save the document before closing it. As soon as you exit Word, the buttons for the Word documents that you had open disappear from the taskbar to let you know that the program is no longer running.
Alternatively, you can click the Word window's Close button as a shortcut for choosing File, Exit.
Click the Close Window button if you only want to close the document window, but leave Word open. (This is a shortcut for choosing File, Close.)
If you close all of your documents without closing Word, the Word window will be empty. You can then exit Word by clicking the Close button (or by choosing File, Exit ).
TIP
Closing Multiple Word Documents
If you open more than one document at a time, Word by default displays each one in a separate Word window, each with its own taskbar button. Opening the File menu and choosing Exit or clicking the Close button in any Word window closes them all.
