16.7 Standards Efforts for VoDSL

The DSL Forum has formed a voice working group and has defined requirements for both loop extension, which they have termed broadband loop emulation service (BLES), and for other packetized voice service architectures, which they have termed multi-service data networks (MDN). The existing technical reference [10] define functional and OAM requirements for these services and defines detailed architectures for the support of voice for a BLES environment. Work continues on defining requirements for MDN (VoDSL for packetized voice networks, e.g., VoIP for DSL). Work also progresses to specify requirements for channelized voice over DSL in the DSL Forum. Free copies of approved specifications and lists of work in progress are available at the DSL Forum's Web site: www.dslforum.org.

The ATM Forum has defined detailed requirements for support of loop extension using AAL2 in their VMOA (voice and multimedia over ATM) working group. ATM Forum technical reference af-vmoa-0145.0000 [1] defines protocols for loop emulation services over AAL2. They based their service requirements on the work of the DSL Forum in TR-39. This effort defines bearer, control, and management planes for loop extension application over ATM using AAL2 encapsulation. The ATM Forum has continued to extend the architecture for voice-over AAL2 to use MEGACO signaling. They are also defining management interfaces for loop extension. Free copies of approved specifications and lists of work in progress are available at the ATM Forum's Web site: www.atmforum.com.

The International Telecommunications Union Telecom Section (ITU-T) defines international standards for the DSL PHYs, for ATM including voice-over ATM, and for packetized voice (H.323) and MEGACO (H.248). Their published recommendations can be purchased for download from their Web site: www.itu.int.
