12.6 Dedicated Data Home Networks

For those who are able to install their own dedicated LAN wiring or pay others to do it, and are willing to be confined to the few sites where the LAN connectors are located, the ultimate in performance and reliability is available.

The principal LAN specifications are listed in the following table:

Standard Name

Gross Bit Rate

Wire Distance

IEEE 802.3

10 Mb/s

10 BASE-T, 100 meters of CAT3 wire

IEEE 802.3v

100 Mb/s

100 BASE-T, 100 meters of CAT5 wire

IEEE 802.3z

1 Gb/s

1000 BASE-T, 100 meters of CAT5 wire

IEEE 802.ae

10 Gb/s

Fiber only

Further information on LANs may be found as www.uts.utexas.edu/ethernet/ethernet or www.10gea.org.

The following are not considered to be LANs, but the are used to interconnect equipment via short connectorized jumper cables.

Specification Name

Gross Bit Rate

Wire Distance

IEEE 1394 [4]

400 Mb/s

4.5 meters per hop

USB 1.1

12 Mb/s

5 meters

USB 2.0

480 Mb/s

5 meters

Fast SCSI

160 Mb/s

about 2 meters

RS 232

115 kb/s

4 meters

Parallel bus

920 kb/s

about 3 meters

[4] IEEE 1394 is also known as FireWire; 1.6 Gb/s expected for a further version of IEEE 1394.
