Chapter 10. The Data Dictionary

If you have a photographic memory or keep perfect records or just don't ever create more than ten tables, you can skip this chapter. For the rest of us, however, the data dictionary is the one Oracle tool that consistently saves us from disaster and from wasting time.

For example, suppose that six months from now you have to go into the waiver database and revisit some of the constraints or take a look at all the users you created. You can't remember all the tables you created, and besides, you did such a fine job on the waiver project that they gave you two more and you've been buried with those. The waiver project is now just one of those happy memories of success. Nor do you remember all the waiver users you created, though you have a hunch that it's something like 100 or so.

Well, you could start hunting and pecking through your old documentation, reports , scripts, and views, and hopefully find what you need. Or you could whip out your data dictionary "cheat sheet" and quickly find the information you need and look like a hero, again.

You will learn that the data dictionary is your friend . You will soon know that the data dictionary can turn your hunches into facts because it is loaded with views of tables, users, constraints, rights, privileges, and so forth. Learning how the data dictionary works will pay you back a hundredfold, so pay attention.
