Beep Beep! Here Comes Oracle Passing IBM on the Information HighwayThe third important date is 1979. In that year, Relational Software Inc. (now Oracle Corporation), introduced the first commercially available implementation of SQL. As already mentioned, Larry Ellison took quick advantage of the IBM System R research, and he became an early leader in the RDBMS field. Oracle and IBM are currently the major RDBMS vendors. All other RDBMS vendors have a minuscule market share. Many other dates are considered to be watersheds or true technological shifts. The invention of the transistor , the PC, client/server technology, and the Internet ”to name a few examples ”all have played an important role in getting us to where we are today. However, I believe that the three dates discussed in this chapter signify the most important milestones in the development and commercialization of RDBMSs. |
