With the fast pace of change around XML, and Microsoft realized that SQL Server XML functionality would soon be out of date unless it released update packs with enhanced XML functionality prior to the release of YUKON, the next full version of the product expected by the end of 2003. SQLXML is a free-of-charge download that includes some new XML functionality, including the ability to expose stored procedures as Web services via SOAP. SQLXML 3.0 also updates support of Diffgrams, which allow data updates via XML data sets.
