This appendix presented design principles followed throughout ACE to achieve its goals of providing the benefits of host infrastructure middleware discussed in Section 0.3.1. Some of these principles are well known in the generative programming community [CE00], but aren't widely known to network programmers. Other principles are described more abstractly in the Wrapper Facade pattern description in [SSRB00]. Due to the well- considered and time-proven design fundamentals embodied in ACE, it's a flexible, powerful, and portable toolkit that's helped thousands of projects avoid the pitfalls associated with the accidental complexities discussed in this book.
