Networked servers may associate one or more OS processes or threads with one or more application services. These factors require design decisions in a number of dimensions that affect thread and process usage, CPU resource usage, scheduling behavior, and application performance. This chapter provided a domain analysis of the rich set of concurrency dimensions that can be used to design networked applications. The remaining chapters in this book describe the ACE wrapper facades that resulted from this domain analysis. There we focus on the pros and cons of encapsulating and using synchronous event demultiplexing , multiprocessing, threading, and synchronization mechanisms available on today's operating systems.
