Summary

The tactics you employ for managing an address space are absolutely critical in the successful long-term management of an address space. As I constantly remind my graduate students, there are precious few absolutes in internetworking. Picking the "right" approach requires that you have a solid command not only of the technology but also the context in which you are applying and managing it. The approaches described throughout this chapter are not the only ways to manage an address space. Other approaches exist that are highly implementation-specific. For example, you could allocate blocks by departments within a company, by floor in an office building, or even by region. Recognize that each of these approaches still requires you to select a tactic for parsing address space within whatever arbitrary scheme you have selected.

This chapter concluded our exploration of the IPv4 address space by looking at ways to manage network address spaces. These approaches are generic enough that they can probably be used with virtually any number-based network address. For the time being, that is IPv4. However, IPv6 continues to loom on the horizon. It might well become tomorrow's de facto standard protocol for internetworking. The next chapter concludes this book by looking at this emerging protocol.
