Chapter 13. Planning and Managing an Address Space

Managing an IP address space is a deceptively difficult and complex task. Careful planning and foresight are an absolute requirement but they must be complemented by a keen appreciation of the binary mathematics of the address space itself. Last, but not least, it helps if you understand some of the issues regarding the address space as it relates to the industry you work in.

This chapter looks at the requirements for managing an address space and how those requirements can change with context. In simpler terms, how you would manage an address space for an enterprise differs from how you would manage it for an Internet hosting center or Internet service provider (ISP). Each context has unique operational requirements that must be factored into planning an address space.
