Summary

Far from being merely a passive means of uniquely identifying computers at the periphery of a network or internetwork, IP addresses play an active role in routing. Routers share IP network addresses that they know about with other routers. That enables any-to-any connectivity within an IP network. Equally important, IP network addresses are also shared between networks to enable internetworks of truly global proportions to be built.
