Best Practices

  • Use Project 2003 Standard or Professional for the management of simpler projects, but investigate the benefits of Project 2003 Server for project portfolio management.

  • Experiment with Project 2003's capabilities to save project information in different formats, such as Copy Picture to Office Wizard, and the Save As Web Page feature. Many organizations find that these different formats make it easier for end users to work with than the standard Project Gantt chart. And the Project software is not required to view these other formats.

  • To enable users who don't have Visio 2003 installed on their workstations to view Visio files, use the Save As Web Page feature.

  • As with Visio 2003, PowerPoint 2003 files can be much more accessible when saved as web pages to SharePoint 2003 sites or workspaces.

  • Investigate Publisher 2003's tools for creating and editing web pages to spice up SharePoint sites by creating attractive newsletters, calendars, or other documents.

  • Consider using Access 2003 to create databases to store information for basic forms rather than SharePoint 2003 lists as applicable. Many organizations are familiar with Access 2003 and find it an excellent way to manage large amounts of data.

  • To leverage the form library Web Part, InfoPath is required and enables the creation and customization of sophisticated forms for the enterprise.

  • Consider using Live Communications Server 2005 to manage the IM and other enhanced communication needs of the organization and to fully enable the online presence features of SharePoint 2003.
