Installing Coldfusion Server

I l @ ve RuBoard

Now that you have Personal Web Server in place, you're ready to install ColdFusion Server. ColdFusion Server is the guts of ColdFusion. Without it, the pages you create will not work.

NOTE

There are three versions of ColdFusion Server: Enterprise, Professional, and Single IP. Each of these versions offers a different level of service, with Enterprise being the most feature-rich and expensive. The Professional version lacks some of the advanced features of Enterprise, but weighs in at a fraction of the cost. The single-user version, which we will be working with here, offers all features but works with only one user: you. When you install the server, it is installed as the Enterprise version. After 30 days, unless you purchase a license from Macromedia, it reverts to single- user mode.

  1. Double-click the file coldfusion-50-win-us.exe on your CD.

This starts the installation of ColdFusion Server.

Your first step is to choose where to save the files that ColdFusion needs to use during the installation. It is a good idea to install these files in the default WINDOWS\TEMP directory. This enables easy cleanup of unnecessary files after the installation.

  2. Click Next to save the installation files in the default directory.

ColdFusion extracts all the files necessary to perform the installation.

After the files have been extracted, the installation automatically continues, and an Install Wizard welcome screen appears.

  3. Click Next.

You are now asked to accept the terms of the license agreement. To continue with the installation, you must click Yes.

  4. Click Yes.

After you accept the license agreement, you are prompted to enter some personal information.

  5. Fill in your name and, if you have one, your company name , and click Next.

Leave the Serial Number fields blank. This installation gives you a 30-day trial period for the Enterprise version of ColdFusion. After the trial period, the server will revert to single-user mode. After the 30 days, if you wish to keep a full version of the server you must purchase a license from Macromedia. If you do not, you will still have an Enterprise version of the software, but no one other than you can use it to process ColdFusion pages.

The next step is to select the Web server you will be using in conjunction with ColdFusion. We've already installed Personal Web Server, and that is what we will be using.

  6. Select the Microsoft IIS, Peer Web Server, or Personal Web Server radio button and click Next.

If the Microsoft IIS, Peer Web Server, or Personal Web Server option does not appear, make sure that you have Personal Web Server installed.

  7. Click Next to display the Choose Destination Path screen.

The defaults that appear on the Choose Destination Path screen should be left unchanged, unless you selected a different folder for your document root, in which case you need to change the Webroot directory to match the one you previously selected.

  8. Click Next. Click Additional ColdFusion 5 Components to expand the list of components you can add. Choose the components you want.

You can select additional components to be installed with ColdFusion Server. I highly recommend installing the documentation and examples, as these can be a tremen dous help as you continue to learn ColdFusion. (Even experienced developers find themselves checking the documentation every now and then.) Unless you will be writing advanced custom tags in Java or C++, you don't need to install the CFXAPI Tag Dev Kit.

  9. Click Next, choose and enter a password, and reenter the password in the Confirm field. Check the Use the same password for ColdFusion Studio as ColdFusion Administrator check box.

You are selecting the password that you will use to log into the ColdFusion Administrator once it is installed, as well as the password to access certain features involving the server in ColdFusion Studio. The password you type in the Confirm field must match the password you typed in the Password field.

    TIP

Write down your password and store it in a safe place. If you forget it, there's no easy way to retrieve it.

  10. Click Next to display the Confirm Selections window.

This screen gives you a chance to confirm your installation choices and selections. If you made a mistake or want to change something, you can go back and make corrections now.

  11. Click Next. Wait patiently.

The server finishes installing all the necessary files and prompts you to restart your computer. Leave the default selection of "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" selected. If you don't restart your computer, you will be unable to use or access the ColdFusion server.

  12. Click Finish.

When your computer has finished rebooting, a "Welcome" browser page opens. It has links to the documentation, as well as a few other links to help you get started.

  13. In the top part of the window, click the link-word Validate in step 2 ("Validate that the installation was successful").

    An Installation Test page opens.

  14. Click Test Installation.

If the installation was successful, a screen appears that says "Success: Test Query Complete." If you see this screen, the ColdFusion server was installed properly, and you are ready to move on.
