Using the Explorer View

The Explorer view has also been mentioned several times in previous lessons. It is available in document libraries and picture libraries only. The option for Explorer view will be made available in the Select a View area on the left-hand side of the window. When you click Explorer View, you may get the following warning message: "This page contains both secure and nonsecure items. Do you want to display the nonsecure items?" Click Yes if this message appears.

Figure 10.5 shows the Explorer view of the picture library. How this view appears will be affected by your Folder settings in Windows Explorer. Therefore, common tasks may or may not be shown in the Explorer view in the library.

In Figure 10.5, the Folder Tasks menu and Other Places menu are visible. If these are not visible in your Explorer view you can change the settings from Windows Explorer by following these steps:

1.

From within Windows Explorer, click Tools, Folder Options.

2.

On the Folder settings General tab, select Show common tasks in folders option. Click OK.

If the Use Windows classic folders option was chosen on the General tab, you wouldn't see the Folder Tasks and Other Places menus in the Explorer view.

Figure 10.5 shows another menu and submenu opened by right-clicking the documentwhich may generate a warning window stating "Running a system command on this item might be unsafe. Do you wish to continue?" (you need to click Yes). This menu provides a number of options. Figure 10.5 shows the submenu for the Send To option. You can see that the document can be compressed, a shortcut on the desktop can be created, and the document can be sent to a mail recipient or to My Documents.
