Different Metadata Possibilities


A helpful way to think about metadata is that each column in the document library is similar to an Excel column, in that the type of information it can contain must be defined when it is created.

If you have rights to do so, from within the document library or list you can click Modify settings and columns from the left-hand menu and scroll down to the Columns section, which shows the different columns available for editing in the library. Note that the type of information is listed, as highlighted in Figure 9.3, and in this case is either Single line of text or Choice.

If you have rights to do so, you can click Add a new column at the bottom of the Columns section and you will see the Add Column page (referenced as fldNew.aspx in the URL), as shown in Figure 9.4. A number of different types of information can be selected, which we will review briefly.
