Creating and Using Customized Site Templates

If you are not satisfied with the functionality of the default site templates or you want to create a large number of "branded" sites with company logos, default content, and the like, you do have the option of creating and customizing your own site template that can be used in the creation of future sites. Once you set it up, the template will show up as an option when you create any new site, making it easy for you to easily create multiple sites with the exact content you desire.

To set up a customized site template, you must first export an existing site to a Site Template file (.stp). To do this, follow these steps:

1.

From the site home page, click Site Settings from the top menu bar.

2.

Under the Administration section, click Go to Site Administration.

3.

Under the Management and Statistics section, click Save site as template.

4.

Enter a filename for the template along with a title, such as the one shown in Figure 23.3.

5.

Under Include Content, select whether you want the content in the site to be a part of the template. For example, you may want the content of document libraries, lists, and the like to be exported to the template.

6.

Click OK to export.

CAUTION

There is a hard limit of 10MB to the size of a Site Template file, so be sure not to attempt to export too much data from a site to a template; otherwise, the process will fail.

Once your template is added into the default Site Template gallery, you will be able to choose it from the list of templates when you create new sites in SharePoint. You can add multiple templates to this gallery as needed; this is often a very useful way to streamline the creation of sites and workspaces.
