Understanding the Site-Creation Process

Sites in Windows SharePoint Services are the centerpiece of activity within SharePoint. All data is managed and controlled from within the confines of separate sites, and each site is made to be self-sufficient. In fact, sites can be thought of as "islands" of data, each independent from each other in content, user access, and administration, but designed to tie into each other when necessary.

As a Site Administrator, it is often necessary for you to create new sites for your userswhether for a separate project or a separate department or group of users within your organization. Because nearly all other activity in Windows SharePoint Services takes place within a site, it is greatly important that you understand how to create new sites and how to manage the sites you create.
