Understanding Site Administration Tools

As a Site Administrator, you will need to become very comfortable with the tools available to make necessary changes to the site. Users who are not Site Administrators will not be able to access some of these areas, and for good reason. If a user who does not understand what he or she is doing makes the wrong changes, it can severely impact the site.

CAUTION

Remember, SharePoint does not have an "undo" button, so any changes you make are set. This is why it is a good idea to back up your SharePoint site often, especially when you are just getting used to the concept of site administration.

To access the tools you will need to administer your site, perform the following steps:

1.

From the Site home page, click the Site Settings link at the top of the page.

2.

On the next page, you will see three areas: Administration, Customization, and Manage My Information. Click the link under Administration called Go to Site Administration.

3.

Navigate through some of the links on this page to get a feel for the types of tasks you can do.

Nearly all the administrative tasks specific to your site are located in this area of the site. Portal administration, if you are using the full SharePoint Portal Server product, and cross-site administration will take place in other areas of the portal. For example, Virtual server, antivirus, HTML viewer, and database settings can be configured from a different toolSharePoint Central Administration.
