Activity 6.1: Defining Sites and Placing Domain Controllers in Sites

In this activity you will read about an organization that is planning its Active Directory infrastructure. Your task is to analyze the organization's environment to define the sites and domain controllers needed in an Active Directory infrastructure. You will define sites and place domain controllers by creating a site diagram and indicating the location of all domain controllers.

Scenario: Ramona Publishing

You are an infrastructure planner on the Active Directory infrastructure design team for Ramona Publishing, a publisher of Spanish language books with seven locations in Miami, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, New York, San Juan, and Madrid. The business and technical environment analysis documents, the forest plan, the domain plan, and the OU plan have already been compiled, and copies have been distributed to everyone on the team. You are now in the process of defining sites and placing domain controllers for the organization.

Your design team has created the network architecture diagram for Ramona Publishing, shown in Figure 6.6. Domain locations have also been included on the diagram. Each location has a high-speed backbone that connects a set of 10—100 Kbps LANs.
