The Absolute Minimum

  • The Io.sys , MSdos.sys , Config.sys , Autoexec.bat , and Win.com files are processed in order to start Windows 9x/Me.

  • Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP processes NTLDR , Boot.ini , NTdetect.com , Ntoskrnl.exe , and Hal.dll during the startup process.

  • The Windows Registry is also read as part of the startup process for all versions of Windows on the A+ Certification Exam.

  • Windows uses Regedit as the Registry editor. Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 can also use Regedt32 for some Registry-editing tasks .

  • The My Computer icon in the Windows GUI provides access to drives , the Control Panel, and other important Windows components .

  • The Control Panel controls major hardware components in Windows.

  • The System Tray and Taskbar provide one-click access to currently running programs and utilities.

  • The Start menu provides shortcuts to most Windows programs and utilities.

  • The Accessories folder provides access to Windows accessories; most system tools are found in the System Tools folder inside the Accessories folder.

  • ScanDisk, CHKDSK, Defragment (not in Windows NT 4.0), and Disk Cleanup are Windows's major disk management tools.

  • Windows provides both GUI-based and command-line file management tools for displaying files and attributes, copying files, locating files, renaming files, and removing files.

  • Major command-line functions and programs include DIR , COPY , XCOPY , XCOPY32 , ATTRIB , DEL / ERASE , RENAME , VER , and DELTREE .

  • Windows's performance can be improved through adjustments of the default locations for temporary files, swapfile /paging file, and, in Windows 9x/Me, the settings for the disk cache.
