The Absolute Minimum

Use this section to review the highlights in this chapter just before you take the exam. You can also use these highlights to determine what parts of the chapter to study in greater detail.

  • To clean equipment safely, use materials designed especially for electronics and computer use.

  • Avoid ESD buildup by using antistatic cleaners and computer-grade vacuum cleaners.

  • Batteries and empty containers used for cleaning products can be environmental hazards; contact the local EPA for help in disposing of them properly.

  • You can use local firms or original vendors to recycle inkjet and toner cartridges.

  • Alternatives to discarding equipment include donations to schools or charities or paying for recycling at an electronics or computer- servicing facility.

  • A product's MSDS (material safety data sheet) provides safe handling and disposal information.

  • ESD (electro-static discharge ) can damage equipment even if no shock can be felt.

  • You can reduce ESD with antistatic parts storage bags, antistatic work mats, wrist straps, and antistatic cleaners.

  • CRT monitors , printers, and power supplies are major high-voltage hazards.

  • Disconnect high-voltage hazard sources, instead of just turning them off, for maximum safety.
