Creating a Virtual Web in IIS

Many of the code samples in this book require you to create and use a virtual Web in Internet Information Services (IIS). Here are the steps for creating a virtual Web named workingwithcrm that we reference throughout the book. These steps assume a default IIS configuration and Microsoft CRM installation.

  1. Log on to the Microsoft CRM server.

  2. Create a directory called workingwithcrm at C:\Inetpub. If necessary, you can create this directory anywhere on the file system except where you install the Microsoft CRM Web files. Microsoft CRM recommends that you do not alter the Web directory structure of the Microsoft CRM application.

  3. On the taskbar, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

  4. Expand the local computer, and then expand Web Sites.

  5. Right-click Microsoft CRM 3.0, and on the menu that appears, point to New, and then click Virtual Directory. Click Next.

  6. In the Alias box, type workingwithcrm, and then click Next.

  7. In the Path box, enter the full directory path of the previously created directory (C:\Inetpub\workingwithcrm), and then click Next.

  8. Select the Read and Run scripts (such as ASP) check boxes, and then click Next.

  9. Click Finish. You have created a virtual directory in IIS.
